Garden fish pond filters and fish pond pumps

After you've decided on a pump for your fish pond, the next consideration is how to keep your pond water clean and free of ammonia and nitrate impurities. Now keep in mind that biofilters are different from basic swimming pool filters, and they serve an entirely different purpose. You need to understand the differences between the two.

  • With a swimming pool filter, water is normally pumped through a sand filter that removes solids and particles that remain suspended in the water. Think for a moment about the process that's occurring in your garden fish pond, especially when populated with fish. The fish eat food (or most of it, the remainder is left behind) and then the fish excrete solid and liquid waste into the water. The fish also pass impurities into the water through their gills. This becomes a perfect breeding ground for pathogenic bacteria and other toxic chemicals, and if not removed quickly, your beloved fish basically poison themselves in a very short time.

That's where a biofilter comes into play.
